What is Meghan’s Studio about?

  • First, I believe that teaching is a two-way street. As important as it is for us to teach our students new material, it is just as important to let ourselves learn as well. This learning comes in many different forms, from cultures different from our own, having different abilities, and even just a new perspective on a topic. As I become a more experienced teacher, this is something that I have become more aware of.

Second, I do not think teaching is simply about the material. Teaching is also about teaching professional and life skills to the students. This can be anything from time management, communication, or even critical thinking. Being able to think critically about the world we live in is important, and I plan to encourage it by engaging in challenging yet rewarding discussions that leave space to be brave and think outside the box.

Third, it is important to acknowledge that students are individuals and will be coming in with not only different backgrounds, but also with different styles of learning and even thinking.

Fourth, I want to meet the students where they are at to best help them succeed. For example, I will encourage my students to record all of their lessons if they feel like it would benefit them.

All in all, I want to leave the pathway for learning to be open for both the student and the teacher. It is not simply about passing information to the student, and it's not always about the materials. It's important to know where the student is coming from, and how they might think differently from you and each other. Lastly, I truly believe that students should be given every chance to succeed; ultimately, the teachers succeed when the students succeed.

  • I am committed to fostering an inclusive and diverse environment that values and celebrates the unique perspectives and experiences of individuals from all backgrounds. Diversity, to me, is not just about differences in race, ethnicity, gender, or age, but also encompasses a broad spectrum of characteristics, including but not limited to sexual orientation, socioeconomic status, physical and cognitive abilities, and cultural backgrounds.

Throughout my life, I have had the privilege of interacting with people from diverse backgrounds and have witnessed the richness that comes from such interactions. These experiences have taught me the importance of empathy, open-mindedness, and active engagement with individuals who bring different viewpoints to the table. By embracing diversity, we create opportunities for personal growth, innovation, and collaboration that can lead to a more equitable and just classroom experience.

In my personal and professional life, I strive to:

Actively listen: I believe that actively listening to the voices of individuals from different backgrounds is essential for building understanding and empathy. It’s through listening that we can appreciate the unique challenges and experiences of others.

Advocate for inclusion: I am committed to creating spaces where everyone feels valued, respected, and empowered to contribute their best. This includes challenging biases and prejudices when I encounter them.

Seek education and self-awareness: I understand that fostering diversity requires continuous learning and self-reflection. I am dedicated to educating myself about various cultures, histories, and perspectives to enhance my understanding of the world.

Encouraging diverse perspectives: In any collaborative setting, I actively seek diverse viewpoints and encourage individuals to share their unique insights and experiences. This diversity of thought can lead to more creative and effective solutions.

Support underrepresented groups: I am dedicated to advocating for the rights and opportunities of underrepresented and marginalized communities. I believe that we should all work together to dismantle systemic barriers and create a more inclusive classroom. I plan to do this by not only educating myself and increasing my self-awareness, but by challenging biases and stereotypes that students might face in course material, the music industry, and even our own lives.

In summary, I am committed to promoting diversity and inclusion in all aspects of my life. I believe that embracing and celebrating differences not only enriches our personal experiences, but also leads to more innovative and equitable classroom opportunities. Together, we can create an academic environment where everyone has the opportunity to thrive and contribute to the fullest extent of their abilities.
